World Premiere of the ‘Sorolla in Private’
The Galería de las Colecciones Reales in Madrid hosted the unveiling of ARTIKA’s new artist’s book, Sorolla in Private, on January 23. This marks the third edition dedicated to the master of light and the most personal to date, as it includes 71 of his drawings featuring portraits and family scenes.
The event, which held great success within the public and media, was attended by Blanca Pons-Sorolla, patron of the Sorolla Foundation and the painter’s great-granddaughter, as well as Enrique Varela Agüí, director of the Sorolla Museum. Both were indispensable in the creation of this edition and presented the work alongside Marc Buil, ARTIKA’s global director.
The edition consists of 2,998 exclusive, limited, and numbered copies. The Art Book, which includes the 71 drawings, is complemented by an unpublished art print of Clotilde, described by Blanca Pons-Sorolla as “the most portrayed woman by an artist.” Accompanying the detailed analysis in the Study Book, which delves into the artist’s devotion to art and his family, a third volume completes this intimate portrayal of the artist: the correspondence Three Decades of Love. For the first time, Clotilde’s letters to the painter are published, revealing her most personal side through a total of 210 correspondences between the couple.
This piece sheds new light on Sorolla, offering a glimpse into the artist’s most essential and private world, composed of his children Joaquín, Elena, and María, and his wife Clotilde, who “made his passion possible.” As Enrique Varela explains, “His legacy is not limited to the 1,400 paintings or the 5,000 drawings, but encompasses the entire life story—personal, professional, and intimate—of a remarkable individual.”
