Lita Cabellut, Artist of the Year 2021 in the Netherlands

Lita

Lita Cabellut has been named Artist of the Year 2021 in the Netherlands. This prestigious distinction places the author of Blood Wedding, the ARTIKA edition, amongst the greats, such as Rembrandt and Van Gogh.

To be placed amongst the greats, you have to be unique
‘In this culture where art is so present, this recognition moves me deeply.’ This is how Lita Cabellut expressed her gratitude last November when she learnt of the jury's decision. This recognition, for her ‘unexpected and incredible’, is the most important in the art world in the Netherlands. After several decades of working with the great Dutch masters and being inspired by them, Lita Cabellut said she was proud that the country in which she lives ‘artistically adopts’ her.

Emotions that go beyond the canvas
Being Artist of the Year in the Netherlands is a distinction that involves the approval of a panel of experts, but also the votes of the public. Through her ‘penetrating and moving’ portraits, the jury valued the strength and originality of Lita Cabellut's work. Her art has been described as a revelation of ‘what is deeply hidden within human being, within all his facets’. The vital dimension of ‘a strong woman and an example that someone can fight for what they want and achieve it’ was also highlighted. In short, the critics have considered all the merits of an ‘authentic, versatile and pure’ creator.

To create by hand, to feel with the heart
Lita Cabellut was 19 years old when she began her art studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. The country that welcomed her during her formative years, eventually became her home. Fascinated by Dutch light, she set up her studio in The Hague and developed a unique and multidisciplinary creative personality. Today, she is one of the most sought-after Spanish artists worldwide and holds dear both her origins and the land that now recognizes her as part of its artistic history: ‘My bones are Spanish and my muscles are Dutch.’

Passion, color, and immortal images
If we look into Lita Cabellut's roots, we find a connection with another distinctive creator: Federico Garcia Lorca. Through the focus of her work and her career, both on a creative and personal level, she was the right artist for a very special ARTIKA project: the adaptation of Blood Wedding, the tragedy of Lorca. The groundbreaking vision of Lita, who often defines herself as ‘a storyteller’, translates into images all the symbolic strength of the original text and turns this limited edition into a true work of art.

Blood Wedding, the union of two creative universes

Whoever reads this book will undoubtedly be captivated by the expressive energy and visual beauty that Lita Cabellut brings to every page, through a succession of characters and scenes that transport us to a time and space of our own.
