IN THE MIND OF JAUME PLENSA
There is a space where an artist’s dreams come true, even before they take shape as pieces of art that arouse our emotions. It is at once a physical location and an incredibly unique corner of the imagination. Welcome to Jaume Plensa 61, an open door to an exclusive space which has been inaccessible to the public – until now.
Inspiration and subject
Jaume Plensa 61 was created to reveal where the artwork that can be admired in museums and public spaces around the world come from. For Jaume Plensa, sculpture is the best way to ask questions. In this book, however, it is he who reveals the inner workings of his creative process.
Jaume Plensa reveals how important the studio is in artistic creation. And he shows that this space, the studio, is much more than just the workshop or the industrial space where the physical work is performed. Because for Plensa, the real studio is in his head, a studio that he takes along with him wherever he goes.
Thought and space
This concept of the studio as a corner of the artist’s mind inspired the artbook’s exclusive design. The presentation of Jaume Plensa 61 includes the sculpture of a head, one of the iconic images of the artist’s work, which also serves to symbolise the place where the true creative space is found. Thus, the head opens to reveal the two volumes that comprise the piece.
The sculpture/case, created exclusively for this edition, reproduces the face of a young girl with her eyes closed. The origin of this characteristic gesture is rooted in an attitude of introspection. “There is a wonderful landscape, inside every person, that is only accessible when you close your eyes and look inward”.
Images and reflections
The piece includes an Art Book that guides readers on a fascinating adventure: the journey from idea to object. Images from the artist’s personal archive make it possible to visualise the process of assembling the pieces and creating a variety of shapes.
In addition to its visual dimension, the Art Book is supplemented by the artist’s reflections. Plensa speaks about creation and challenge, about the memory of materials and the power of words, all with precision and poetic wisdom.
Jaume Plensa 61 also includes a small volume, the Study Book, which contains fragments of the artist’s notebooks and designs. According to the author, this unpublished selection is particularly striking, the perfect complement to the Art Book, providing a deeply intimate insight into his artistic career.
