Joaquín Sorolla

Sorolla in private

An artist's book that showcases Sorolla's two great passions: his art and his family, through 72 drawings revealing portraits and scenes of his wife and children in their daily lives.

This exclusive edition offers a glimpse into the heartfelt daily life of one of Spain’s greatest painting geniuses. It allows us to discover Sorolla in his freest, most personal, and spontaneous form, with drawings created for himself rather than for the canvas or public exhibition.

A numbered and limited edition of 2,998 copies, created in celebration of Sorolla’s Centennial in collaboration with his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla and the Museo Sorolla.

The piece is presented in a display case designed as a lectern, housing all its elements. The image behind the methacrylate invites us into the artist’s inner world, displaying Sorolla’s most intimate and lesser-known works: his drawings of family portraits and scenes.

«Through Sorolla’s gaze, we perceive great affection and love. These are scenes of maternal care, children’s playtime, afternoons of sewing, napping, reading, studying, and more—an illustrated diary of the painter’s family life.»

The Art Book includes 71 drawings, die-cut, reproduced at actual size, and affixed to the volume with three dots of glue. Each chapter introduces us to a member of the painter’s family. A separate, large-format print, Estudio al Natural, features an intimate portrait of Clotilde, which once hung in the couple’s bedroom.

The Study Book provides an in-depth analysis of Sorolla’s life and work through contributions from experts who delve into the artist’s pictorial and graphic oeuvre. It also includes a comprehensive study of all the drawings featured in this edition. Finally, Correspondence: Three Decades of Love, which contains 210 letters exchanged between Sorolla and his wife, revealing Clotilde’s letters for the first time.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The volumes of the Art Book and the Study Book are hand-sewn with white cotton thread. Once the text blocks are assembled, they are joined to their covers through artisanal bookbinding techniques.

The cover, back cover, and rounded spine of the Art Book feature a detail from the renowned oil painting Instantánea, Biarritz (1906), printed on canvas fabric.

The 71 drawings of family scenes have been die-cut, printed at actual size, and affixed to the book with three glue points. The back of each drawing includes numbering and the copyright of the Museo Sorolla.

The cover of the Study Book showcases a photograph of the Sorolla family, printed in a single ink on cardstock with a matte soft-touch anti-fingerprint lamination for a flawless finish.

The edition includes an exclusive art print featuring a beautiful image of Clotilde, reproduced at original size (85 x 44 cm) and numbered on the back, like the rest of the prints in the collection.

A handcrafted cardboard box with a sliding lid and the title of the print in white ink protects this exquisite work of art.

The cover of the Epistolary features an embossed title created with blind stamping. This volume is hand-bound using Swiss binding, with a covered spine and a glued cover.

The design of the spectacular case, made with painted iron and methacrylate on the top, resembles a lectern-shaped structure with internal compartments for the three books and the art print.

The case displays the cover of the Art Book behind a frontal glass panel, which includes the artist’s signature laser engraved. A rear lid allows for a secure closure thanks to neodymium magnets.
