Los Cantos de Maldoror

(SOLD OUT EDITION)

The six notebooks that make up Los Cantos de Maldoror, illustrated with Dalí’s brushstrokes. A unique, luxury edition, limited and numbered.

An artist’s book to be enjoyed, featuring the brushwork Salvador Dalí created to illustrate Los Cantos de Maldoror by the Comte de Lautréamont—an essential work that became the standard-bearer of the avant-garde Surrealist movement. The poetic prose of Los Cantos breathes an imaginary, dreamlike world, which Dalí uses to incorporate some of his most characteristic icons and figures, later repeated in his future works.

ARTIKA, in co-edition with the Gala–Salvador Dalí Foundation, presents an inimitable jewel, numbered and limited to 2,998 copies.

The entrance to the Dalinian world is marked by an impressive beechwood case that evokes old travel trunks, a tribute to the two genius protagonists of this work, travelers throughout their lives. Its red silk interior houses all the elements, protected by an iron plate aged by time, announcing the beginning of a journey into Surrealism.

Across six spectacular notebooks, one for each Canto, the reproductions of Dalí’s 42 illustrations are distributed. With a nod to Surrealism, in a labyrinthine exercise, the text follows a play of colors in infinite lines.

The Study Book, indispensable for understanding the Dalinian world and its context, answers the unsettling questions posed by the work through contributions from specialists in each field.

And as a final flourish, the work is accompanied by a folder containing, published for the first time, facsimile reproductions of 11 preparatory drawings and four state proofs of one of the engravings, allowing contemplation of the artist’s meticulous creative process.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Expert technicians analyze, adjust, and correct the proofs, allowing modifications to the final printing plates

The six notebooks that make up the book are sewn with high-quality cotton thread using a semi-manual machine.

The prints, produced in five colors with stochastic screening, are hand-mounted with three points of adhesive.

Once the signatures are sewn and manually trimmed, they are numbered and protected in a heavy-weight folder.

An iron plate, oxidized and hand-polished with pumice stone powder, protects the books inside the case.

A drawing of Dalí’s face, created from a photograph, is hand-silkscreened onto the lid of the trunk.

Using aged beechwood, the cabinetmaker meticulously constructs each trunk, after which the metal fittings are installed.

The upholsterer completes the case with the capitonné padding on the inside of the lid and the red silk lining the cradle that will house the work.

Salvador Dalí

Salvador Dalí

(1904-1989) Dalí, the great multidisciplinary artist of the 20th century and of surrealism, is characterized by his striking dreamlike images, which already enjoyed prestige and popularity during his lifetime.

As an extremely independent and imaginative author, he always showed a remarkable tendency towards rather extravagant behavior. At the Student Residence, he was in contact with the great poet Federico García Lorca and the filmmaker Luis Buñuel.

At the presentation of the film “Un perro andaluz” by Buñuel, he met Gala, who would become his wife and muse, a key piece of his artistic creation.
