Francisco de Goya

Caprichos

(SOLD OUT EDITION)

Los Caprichos is considered one of the most representative creations of Francisco de Goya as an engraver and one of the works that marked a milestone in the history of Spanish art.

Artika, in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza, presents a unique and unrepeatable work with the facsimile reproduction of the 80 prints of the first edition of Goya’s Caprichos.

A collection of satirical engravings that censure the decadence of Spain at the end of the 18th century, which, according to experts, were the result of the artist’s personal situation (illness, lack of love, political tensions and war).

The 80 plates, divided into two parts, one satirical and the other critical, have been reproduced maintaining all the details of the original. The good condition of the first edition used has managed to recreate the same quality obtained by Goya during the printing process.

This edition is presented in a handmade case lined by hand, where the plates are protected with an exceptional folder that reproduces the original. In addition, a book of studies, bound in black dry-stamped silk, provides an in-depth look at the figure of Goya, his work and his time.

«A unique vision of a historical period through a great master.»

PRODUCTION PROCESS

Noble materials, worked by hand, ensure the durability of the work. The case, with a nest inside, is stamped with the caprice 1.

The folder, a replica of the original in a larger size, with a rounded spine and paper lining, houses the engravings.

Once the folder is finished, it is converted into a sturdy stand-alone case, and the interior is lined to emulate the original flyleaves.

The expert checks and adjusts the plates for printing. Stochastic screening is used to provide the maximum number of details.

The artisan printer, attentive to the essential details, examines the prints, discarding those that do not meet the required quality.

Francisco de Goya

Francisco de Goya

(1746-1828) Precursor of the pictorial avant-garde of the 20th century, the great Spanish painter and engraver marked the beginning of contemporary painting, anticipating every pictorial movement that would later appear in Europe; that is why he is considered one of the great masters of the history of art.

Goya’s work is a spectacular way to contemplate the evolution, epochs and characteristics of the life and history of Spain. In his last stage, Goya adopted a sullen and solitary attitude, but he created the best of his production, such as the visionary Black Paintings.
