Joan Miró

Canticle of the Sun

An exclusive piece, created in collaboration with the Successió Miró of Palma, bringing together 33 plates that faithfully reproduce the engravings the artist created to illustrate the poem Canticle of the Creatures by Saint Francis of Assisi.

This exclusive edition, limited to 2,998 copies, is a visual hymn to nature, in which all the colors and forms that have made Joan Miró a universal artist can be recognized.

Canticle of the Sun is a symbolic and spiritual work that coincides with a triple anniversary: the 50th anniversary of the creation of Miró’s series and the inauguration of the Fundació Joan Miró (1975), as well as the 800th anniversary of the Franciscan poem.

In 1975, Canticle of the Sun was published, a work dedicated to the earth and its elements, inspired by the poem Canticle of the Creatures (1225) by Saint Francis of Assisi. Miró offers a modern reinterpretation, using basic colors—red, blue, yellow, and green—with great intensity and purity.

The sun, the moon, and the stars; wind, water, fire, and earth are the protagonists of a story that invites us to embrace the beauty of the natural elements that surround us.

This edition is presented in a case that recreates, in volume, engraving number 20 and houses the two volumes of the work inside. The relief of its forms invites a connection with the artist’s inner universe and the discovery of one of the most mature and significant series of his career.

«The preservation of the original plates has made it possible to faithfully reproduce the 33 engravings included in the Art Book.»

These present a mature visual language, with simple and symbolic elements in essentially primary colors. The covers reproduce two of the preserved plates, simulating the acid and ink imperfections of the originals.

The Study Book is a compendium of Miró’s artistic career, focusing on the analysis of Canticle of the Sun, guided by leading experts on the painter’s life and work.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The 33 engravings—etchings and aquatints—are printed on high-quality paper. Two are die-cut, and sixteen feature embossed and blind stamping. All are reproduced at 75% of the original size.

The 33 plates are manually attached to the Art Book using three adhesive points. The colophon includes the numbering and the copyright of the Successió Miró, which collaborated in the production of the edition.

The front and back covers reproduce engravings numbers 10 and 4 used for the etching technique. They have been crafted following the same processes employed by the artist in the creation of his engravings.

These covers include three attached loose pieces (two on the front cover and one on the back cover) made of 0.5 mm aluminum, laser-cut, primed, digitally printed, and finished with textured matte varnish

The binding of the Art Book is carried out by hand and includes, first, a spine protector, along with black endpapers and the 96 pages hand-sewn with cotton thread.

The Art Book cover, with rounded corners, is attached to the page block using special adhesive. It incorporates three attached loose pieces of 0.5 mm stainless steel, mechanically polished on one side and laser-cut.

The Study Book is also hand-bound, joining the blue cloth-covered covers to the page block. The front cover features Miró’s signature stamped in white, along with the ARTIKA BOOKS logo.

The case is composed of two lacquered MDF sections (cream and gradient blue). All components are assembled by hand, culminating in the placement of a soft felt lining inside to protect the books.

The design of the case allows the two books of the work to be stored and preserved safely. Once placed inside, the case closes to form the image of engraving number 20 from the series created by Miró in 1975.

Joan Miró

Joan Miró

(1893 -1983) Spanish painter, sculptor, engraver and ceramist, Miró is one of the great names of surrealism, although his work flees from academicism and from ascribing to a particular artistic style. An artist rooted in his homeland, but with a great international projection, even exhibiting in New York and Paris.

After his stay in the French capital, his work becomes more fanciful and dreamlike, abandoning the more conventional methods of painting.

His interest in everyday objects and the natural environment will be the background of some of his technical and formal research. Thus, he created a unique and personal language, being one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century.
