Antonio López

Bodies and flowers

(SOLD OUT EDITION)

Spanish realism is written with its own name, that of Antonio López García, one of the most important contemporary artists in the history of our art.

ARTIKA presents Bodies and Flowers, the painter’s first and only artist’s book, a limited edition, numbered 2,998 copies and signed by the author himself.

An exciting Art Book traces the artistic career of this realist genius and allows us to enjoy his works down to the most delicate details, thanks to the life-size reproduction of many of his works. It also brings us closer to his sensations, his passions and obsessions, based on texts by Rafael Argullol and Antonio López himself, as well as an interview between the painter and Julio Vaquero.

«"Bodies and Flowers” also includes an element of great artistic value, a giclée of the work Rosas de Ávila, in a limited and numbered edition. This print, personally chosen by Antonio López, can also be exhibited as an independent element.»

The Art Book and the giclée print are presented in a slipcase, which reproduces a detail taken from one of the sketches made by the artist for his sculpture “The women of Coslada”. A spectacular work of art, with infinite possibilities, which are discovered by combining the image of the glass of the case with the covers of the book.

PRODUCTION PROCESS

The pages have been printed on high quality 200 g paper to capture the detail of the different materials the artist uses in his creative process.

Printing specialists analyze, adjust and correct the color proofs. One by one, the pages are reviewed and discarded if they do not meet the requirements.

Due to the dimensions of the volume, the Art Book sheets are hand-sewn with high-quality cotton thread.

Printed on canvas cloth in four inks, the cover reproduces a fragment of the painting Espaldas (1964 – 1965) and, closing the book, an image of Adrián and Miriam (2014 – 2015).

Once printed considering the intensity, tonality and colors of the original paintings, the cover is cut to the size of the book for binding.

Once the volume’s guts with the flyleaves have been assembled, the covers are attached with special glue, a careful process that is carried out entirely by hand.

The spine is worked by hand to achieve the rounded effect that can be seen in the bound book, on which the artist’s name appears.

This limited edition, numbered and stamped to guarantee the printing quality of the giclée technique, includes the artist’s signature, and is presented in a diptych for protection.

Made of maple wood, the artisan cabinetmakers cut each of the pieces separately and then join them together to form the two parts that make up the case.

The assembly is checked for fit and a piece is incorporated into the back with a hinge that will help keep the case upright.

To give it a distinguished and spectacular touch, the wood case is painted in a shade of gray, personally chosen by Antonio López.

The transparent glass cover, which reproduces a detail of the sketch of the sculpture The women of Coslada, has been silkscreened in black ink with a varnish that gives it a slight opacity.

Antonio López

(1936) Spanish realism is written with its own name, that of Antonio López, one of the most important contemporary artists in the history of our art. His production gathers elements of different artistic currents, such as cubism or surrealism. However, from the 1960s on, he left behind the dreamlike to develop a more objective approach.

His works are an autobiography that range from the pictorial to the sculptural.
